Hilton Knoxville - Exterior refresh
knoxville, tn (2007)
When faced with the task of repainting their 1982 World’s Fair-era concrete box, the Hilton Knoxville provided a clear project brief: Develop an innovative concept that enhances the city skyline, while setting their business apart from the competition.
The design deconstructs the volume of the building into vertical and horizontal color systems. An eye-catching orange playfully wraps the tower on each side, emphasizing unique features of each elevation while making the tower appear taller and thinner. Seen from the nearby interstate, the bold color pushes the building into the forefront of the local skyline.
To balance the tower’s dominant color, a soothing green wraps the base, providing a pedestrian level backdrop for the surrounding foliage, covered drop-off and outdoor gathering spots. The design again wraps edges, offering playful glimpses of color depending on your position within the city grid.
Enhanced by the addition of LED up-lighting, the resulting design recalls supergraphic styles of the past for a stylish update. The outcome: a high quality, budget-conscious design, unlike any other building downtown.

Affordable housing project near downtown gets a makeover, inside and out. The modernization gives often-marginalized residents a much-needed sense of place -and pride- in their homes. In the first year after completion, the property experienced an 80% reduction in rent delinquencies, a 20% decline in annual turnover, and a 62% decrease in crime.
